William Hopkins, MD, Cardiologist – Burlington, VT, The UVM Medical Center

(light piano music) – Hi, I’m Dr. William Hopkins and I’m an attending cardiologist. (light piano music) In my practice, I have a
lot of extremely complicated patients and I thoroughly
enjoy trying to help these patients feel better and do better. Part of my philosophy
is that I need to bring the patient in to the care team. I spend a lot of time trying
to educate the patient and their families about
their disease process and I want them to be
involved in their management. (light piano music) I play a unique role in our group. I direct our program for adults with congenital heart disease. Congenital heart disease is
heart disease you’re born with. Now the vast, vast majority
of patients born with a heart defect actually
live into adulthood. This was not necessarily true decades ago. These patients need to shift
from the pediatric world into the adult care
world and I’m that person if they’re born with a
congenital heart defect. I also direct our pulmonary
hypertension program. Pulmonary hypertension, to put it simply, is high blood pressure of the
blood vessels of the lungs, and it causes a unique
form of heart failure. I take care of many, many patients with pulmonary hypertension
through our program. (light piano music)
