My name is Magdalena Chrzanowska and i’m a
Vascular Cell Biologist and Investigator at the Versiti Blood Research Institute.
cardiovascular disease such as hypertension and coronary artery disease
is the leading cause of death in the world. Cardiovascular disease is
initiated by damage to the endothelium, the cells that line your blood vessels.
My research focuses on understanding the internal mechanisms of these endothelial
cells what causes damage to them and what can
be done to ensure they remain healthy. Recently my lab identified a novel and
surprising function of one of the molecules that exist within the
endothelial cells called Rap1. This is important because we have learned
that Rap1 plays a huge role in the health of blood vessels and is required for
maintenance of normal blood pressure. This exciting discovery is an important
step toward developing new and effective treatments for cardiovascular disease
and helping to save countless lives in the United States and around the world.
