UC San Diego Health Performs 4,000th Heart and Lung Surgery

to be part of something that makes such
a big difference in people’s lives it’s really been incredible the major symptom was shortness of
breath with activity mostly just the things that I was used to doing everyday
like riding a bike or hiking or you know going up a flight of stairs would just
totally make me breathless and on average these patients go around
two years before somebody makes the correct diagnosis. These are some of the
sickest patients with end-stage heart failure from their pulmonary hypertension
the transformation that we see firsthand is amazing and within two weeks they
could literally become a new person. She was quite challenging because she
had significant pulmonary hypertension and she had disease and clots that were
really far out in the smaller vessels. One of the things that we’ve been able
to accomplish with our experience and especially over the last five to seven
years with refinement of some of the instruments and our strategy we are able
to go a lot further within the pulmonary vasculature and go more this story. Obviously should be my memory now from
her surgery being number 4000 but of course being a more challenging
operation as well. Every day’s been better than the day before so yeah it’s
just amazing to think that there’s improvement so quickly. What it means to
do 4,000 of these operations having the largest number of these procedures in
the world with the best outcome is really the dedication of the team and
showing what we can accomplish at UCSD when you have a dedicated team that’s
that’s focused on one specific disease and I just could not be more proud of
the team that I work with and privileged to be part of. I’m looking forward to
snowshoeing and hiking and I have a goal to hike South Sisters it’s totally worth
it you know you just have to take the leap and trust and you couldn’t be at a
better place to have it done and it’s life-changing it’s a miracle you
