Headache Treatment: How To Stop A Headache (Cervicogenic)

AJ here, with Stronglife Physiotherapy I want to show you a great way to get some relief from your headaches. There are many different types of headaches but this technique works with a specific type of headache called a cervicogenic headache meaning a headache that originates from the neck. These types of headaches usually feel like they originate from the base of the skull and can radiate forward, sometimes causing pain behind the eye. They are usually one sided, meaning they’re on the right or the left, and it doesn’t switch sides. generally rotating your head to the side of your headache pain will cause an increase in your pain. And you’ll find that turning that direction is stiff and you’re head won’t turn as far. If some or all of these symptoms match yours, then you likely have cervicogenic headaches. There is a stretch that targets the area that causes the headache, and can eliminate the problem. Research shows that those who perform this stretch as instructed had a 50% reduction in their headache symptoms after 4 weeks. And these results were maintained at 12 months. So if it works for them, it will work for you. We’re going to use a specialized strap called a Mulligan self SNAG strap. You can find these on Amazon or here at Stronglife, or you can improvise using a dog leash or the edge of a towel or something similar. We’re going to wrap the strap around the back of your neck. And it should come over the space just below the base of your skull. and wrap around your cheek like this. You’re going to keep your head upright, but keep your neck muscle relaxed and let the strap and your arms do the work. You’re going to get as good of a stretch as you can without pain Hold that for 5 seconds and repeat that 5 times and do that twice a day. Remember, it’s very important that you don’t have pain with this exercise. Try this every day for 4 weeks and see what happens. I think you’ll find that you’ll get some great results and some excellent relief from your headache pain. If you need more help, dry needling and spinal manipulation can be very effective in eliminating this type of headache. Both of which you can get right here at Stronglife Physiotherapy.
