Cardiac Caregiver: Michael Landzberg, MD – Boston Children’s Hospital Heart Center

I grew up in New York City. And I debated whether
or not I wanted to be a teacher, which so many
folks in my family had been, or if I wanted to do
something in the sciences. I remember when I was a mid
teenager, the compassion and the passion
that the caregiver in my little community in
Queens, New York, had for me. I said, that’s
what I want to do. I’m Mike Landzberg. I’m the director of the
Boston Adult Congenital Heart Program, the BACH Program,
and pulmonary vascular group. I do get an achiness
on the right side of the heart, left side
of my body, sometimes. One in 10 extended
families have someone that has congenital heart
disease in their adult years. That’s a lot of folks. In the late 1980s
and early 1990s, we recognized that there
was an obligation, not just to take care of kids and get
them through their kid years, but we needed to
create a service that would be there to support folks. Not to supplant them,
not to take over what they should
engender in themselves, but to give them the
support to do that. There isn’t a day that I don’t
love coming into this place. The most exciting part of
my day is the education that goes on for patients, for
families, the empowerment that goes on for patients
and families, and for the current and next
generation of care providers. Word on the street is
that you’re doing great. Yes. Word on the street is that
both of you are doing great. Is that true? Yes. There isn’t a person
that I interact with, with the diseases that I care
for, that isn’t a hero of mine. The experiences
that they’ve had, what they’ve gone
through in their lives, and their tenacity,
their determination, and their accomplishments,
is something that brings me to
work every day. It gives me meaning. It gives me the
reason for wanting to be here in this group.
