Barbara’s Diabetes Story

Barbara’s Diabetes Story

– Hi. My name is Barbara, and
today I’d like to talk to you about who’s on your support and care team when you have diabetes type 2, and are at risk for
cardiovascular disease. Well, my team starts with me, and just steps I’m going to take to manage and control the condition, and certainly my family
doctor is on that team. And when I was first
diagnosed, she introduced me to certified diabetes educators, and kind of a group training
that I first went to where I learned how to manage
my blood sugar testing, certain dietary things, and it was great to be in a group with other people who had the same issues as I did. Also it’s good to have a
friend who has diabetes and is going through the
same thing that we all are. And my friend Janet, that’s
part of the diabetes program, her and I talk frequently,
and she has helped me so much, just with daily stuff and frustrations. It’s so good to have a friend
when you have diabetes. Also my family has been so helpful to me, especially with family
meals and things like that. They always consider my diet, and provide, you know, carb choices and heart-healthy choices. When you have diabetes type 2, and you’re at risk for
cardiovascular disease, there’s a lot of work, though,
you need to do yourself, to think of yourself as
the pilot of the team. So one of the things I
did, instead of reading, you know, tabloid magazines,
now I’m reading magazines on how I can keep my heart healthy, and how I can self-manage my diabetes, and this is a good magazine as well. I also frequently go to web sites that have really good
content about diabetes, and maybe have message boards where I can hear from other people and how they’re managing the condition. Some of my favorite web sites, of course, are Heart of Diabetes, uh, Diabetes Self-Management is very good, and also dLife, which has a
lot of good message boards, and recipes and things like that. Just remember when you have diabetes, and are at risk for
cardiovascular disease, you’re not alone. There’s a lot of resources out there. So you don’t need to be alone, and you don’t need to be afraid of everything that just comes at you. There is help out there.
