Andrew Kolodziej, MD – UK HealthCare

Hi my name is Andrew Kolodziej. I’m a cardiologist trained here
at the University of Kentucky. My particular interests, from
a cardiology perspective, are advanced heart
failure, heart transplant, but also pulmonary hypertension. And that’s pretty
much why I ended up staying here as faculty. There was a dramatic
moment in my life where, actually, I was hit by
a car, crossing the street. I ended up in the
emergency room, and luckily nothing really
major happened to me. But the paramedics that
literally picked me up off the floor made an impact
on the years going forward. You know, interviewing
here, I realized that the faculty as well
as the nursing staff and everybody involved in
patient care is sincere. The environment
is very collegial. And it doesn’t matter if you’re
a director of a transplant program or a technician
involved in the patient care, everybody is treated
the same way. Because of my
additional training, which was another year
after general cardiology, heart failure and transplant,
that’s, for the most part, who I see, somebody
whose heart has failed, who usually come in over
and over to the hospital with swelling,
fluid swelling, who require additional medicines
to keep them going. In addition to that pulmonary
hypertension patients who are patients with elevated
pressures in the vessels of the lung, we stay with them
for the rest of their life. It really puts us in a
position where we are, really, their family members.
