A Quick Message About Stress, Hope and Talking to Our Children

Hi this is Adrienne from Step Up For Mental Health and I just wanted to give some encouragement in Illinois today at 5
p.m. we basically began our official lockdown from the coab Eve by virus 19
and I just want to give people I had a little stress attack I have stress
attacks when I’m worried and I had one last night and I thought about it you
know everybody’s stressed even though we know that we’re doing all we can and
it’s kind of scary my husband has type 1 diabetes and so
he’s in the risk category so we’re very careful we got all our supplies we even
found toilet paper this morning before 5 p.m. so we are officially in lockdown
mode so you’re gonna start seeing a lot of things we’re step up for mental
health with digital webinars and workshops so we’re also going to be
doing some really cool I didn’t want to do this for a while
I’ve been wanted to read stories to children and we have one that we’re
gonna read I’m sad and sometimes I saw parents today we were in we were in line
I just realized I’m about to touch my face we’re in line and one Parros really
I saw the stress on their face and she was really scared she saw her daughter
maybe her daughter was I don’t know maybe by 4 or 5 years old she was in the
cart and she was about to touch something and her mother screamed don’t
touch that and her daughter was kind of confused and she got really upset she
started crying and she says mommy why are you angry with me
and and she kept on saying and to and the mother was like I’m not angry with
you in a very angry voice but that stress and that’s anxiety and she kept
on saying why are you angry at me what should I do if you’re not angry why are
you talking to me that way or why you showing anger and so I think I started
thinking about this you know we need to talk to our children about what’s going
on they know stress but I don’t have children I have a dog my dog named
Larrabee and he even noticed he’s been really watching us he’s been watching me
and my husband stress about this watching news and he’s kind of stressed
about it so animals and children they can sense and we need to like explain
and that’s why I’m going to read coming up I’m sad because we are bringing that
energy that those feelings that we are all under and children if we don’t
explain that something’s happening and in an environment something’s happening
to our state something’s happening in our world that people many people are
sick and many people are going to get sick even further and we have to start
to explain to children what that means and I know it’s difficult in hard but I
think we have to do it because they think it’s there that your anger your
anger your stress or your feelings of hopelessness they think it’s directed at them and so I think we need to start to realize that
does it matter what age mental health feelings of stress and anxiety and
depression happens to everyone all of us and I had a really bad panic attack last
night because I was so stressed about the new
and everything and what’s happening and you know some things I can’t do and or I
can’t control so all I can do is control myself my family stay at home don’t go
out and follow the guidelines what the CDC is saying well Chicago Public Health
is saying the mayor and the governor and we need to stay inside and hopefully
because we don’t have a cure we don’t have kits we don’t have a vaccine so
this is the only thing we can do and I think we have to come up with some
really interesting fun ways to talk about stress and anxiety and I think
children particularly me to know that sometimes parents gonna feel sad
sometimes you’re gonna feel sad and it’s complicated and but if we just talk and
educate people where they are and what they can handle I think we’ll be okay so
I just wanted to say this video that stuff up for mental health we are
definitely in a really fun people are emailing us a helpline and so we need
help so if you it’s a no difficult but a lot of agencies are getting bombarded
now we’re a small nonprofit but we’re still getting helpline calls and so if you want to help us please go to our website and or please
go on our social media I think we put a link and on Facebook but I will link
this as well on YouTube or Facebook and help us and us help families our goal is
to help individuals and families as we are where we are and we’re gonna do
things where we’re gonna be training people on some cool things and we’re
gonna be talking about mental health or we’re gonna have peer groups online and
we’re gonna be talking and helping as you can
kids and reading to them and storytime and lunch he learns all those things
that we’re gonna do to pass the time because so I’m working very hard but I’m
also trying to be safe and so I believe that humanity is should be saved and I
think that we have to all do our part so we got this let’s do it let’s help
others the most vulnerable please call people that you haven’t talked to in a
while talk to you know the senior in your life talk to a child in your life, so that
they understand that this is gonna be difficult it’s gonna be long and I
believe not a scientist but I believe that we are in for the long time and
it’s okay if we all just kind of have education and listen to professionals
the doctors and the scientists will be okay okay so this is Adrienne Step Up for
Mental Health and see around, bye.
